Editor's note
Riviera Maya, Tulum & Mayakoba from Miami
An editor's pick for the long weekend that swaps spectacle for stillness, chosen for the southern stretches of Tulum, the manicured calm of Mayakoba, and the few resorts that still understand restraint.
The Riviera Maya is not one place but a long ribbon of coastline that holds everything from busy beach clubs to monastic jungle lodges. The trip you have here is almost entirely a function of where, and how carefully, you choose to stay.

Overview
Read the coast as a series of moods: Tulum's southern reaches and the inland jungle remain refreshingly quiet; Mayakoba is a curated, manicured version of the same idea; Akumal and the smaller pockets between offer something gentler. What ties the better stays together is restraint, natural materials, open-air architecture, and respect for the silence the jungle still keeps after dark.
Why It Works from Miami
Cancún is barely two hours from MIA, and a private transfer will put you on the coast within an hour of landing. That accessibility makes the Riviera Maya practical for a long weekend, not only a full week.
Where to Stay
For wellness and quiet, look at adults-only resorts in southern Tulum and the jungle-side properties around Mayakoba. For families, the Mayakoba lagoon resorts and Akumal's design-forward villas offer space without spectacle. Skip the large beach-party resorts in Playa del Carmen unless that is genuinely the trip.

How to Get There
Cancún (CUN) is the gateway for the entire Riviera Maya. Direct flights from MIA land in under two hours, and a pre-arranged transfer takes you the rest of the way south, about 45 minutes to Mayakoba, an hour to Akumal, 90 minutes to Tulum.
A note on flights
Schedules into Cancún are dense year-round, with multiple nonstops a day from MIA. If you'd rather see options side by side, you can search flights from Miami and choose the timing that lets you settle in before sunset.

What to Pack
Lightweight layers for jungle evenings, a good linen shirt or two, reef-safe sunscreen, and a small dry bag for cenote days. Mosquito-friendly clothing in the evening is more elegant than spraying repellent over a freshly pressed shirt.

US passport holders do not require a visa. Sargassum (seaweed) season generally peaks May through August, the better properties manage it well, but it's worth checking conditions before booking those months.
A short policy can quietly cover the unexpected, weather delays, a missed connection, a change of plan, so the trip itself stays unhurried.
Travel coverage
Comprehensive cover with plain-language terms, designed for travelers who'd rather not think about it again once they've packed.
Consider travel coverage with EKTAIf your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled, services like AirHelp can sometimes pursue compensation on your behalf, so it's worth keeping in mind on the way out and back.
